PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women's ice hockey team earned its first Hockey East win of the season Sunday, clipping visiting Maine, 3-1, at Schneider Arena.

The Friars were paced by a veteran and a rookie, as senior co-captain Alyse Ruff ( Tualatin, Ore.) and freshman Corinne Buie (Edina, Minn.) each notched a goal and an assist.

The Friars broke through in the waning stages of the first period. With just 19 seconds left in the opening frame, senior defenseman Amber Yung banged home a rebound through a maze in front. Yung's first of the season made it 1-0 Providence.

The eventual game-winner would come midway through the middle period. At the 9:42 mark, Buie sent a perfect entry from behind the net to a charging Ruff. The co-captain one-timed the puck from the slot and beat Maine goalie Brittany Ott clean. 2-0 Friars.

Maine countered at 6:40 of the third period. While working with a power play, Black Bear junior Ashley Norum drove the puck into the slot from the left point. Teammate Brittany Dougherty redirected the shot through her legs, and into the back of the net, cutting the deficit to 2-1.

PC wasted little time in answering, however. Just 11 seconds later Buie skated into the attack zone, with speed and room to work, and beat OTt with a forehand for her fifth of the season. On the play, fellow freshman Maggie Pendleton (Woodbury, Minn.) collected her first collegiate assist.

Friar goaltender Genevieve Lacasse earned her eighth win of 2010-11, stopping 16 shots. Ott finished with 30 saves.

The Friars are now off until Tuesday, November 16, when they travel to Dartmouth. Face-off in Hanover, N.H. is scheduled for 7 p.m. Providence's next home game is Saturday, November 20, when Northeastern visits Schneider Arena for a 2 p.m. start.
