PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women's ice hockey team defeated McGill University, 6-4 Saturday at Schneider Arena, claiming its final tune-up before the regular season.
The Friars offense was lead by senior defenseman Amber Yung (Rockville, Va.) who scored twice with slapshots from the point. Freshman Rebecca Morse (Westfield, N.J), senior Ashley Cottrell (Sterling, Heights, Mich.), junior Kate Bacon (Chanhassen, Minn.) and senior Alyse Ruff (Tualatin, Ore.) also struck twine.
Despite outshooting McGill, 44-16, Providence had to play catch-up. The Martlets scored three unanswered goals to end the first period, and led at the first intermission 3-1.
Providence recovered quickly to start the second. Cottrell scored just 2:28 into the period, assisted by junior Laura Veharanta (La Verne, Calif.) and Bacon. Just over two minutes later, freshman Maggie Pendleton (Woodbury, Minn.) fed Yung along the blue. The senior's slapshot from the right point found its way through a screen and into the top shelf, knotting the game 3-3.
After the teams traded goals to end the second period, Yung would get the eventual game winner midway through the third. Sophomore Jessica Vella (Pickering, Ontario,) dug the puck out from a crowd in the right corner. She fed back to the point and junior Christie Jensen (Delta, B.C) who moved it to her defense partner for a one-timer into the back of the net at 11:37. Ruff would add an empty netter at 19:27 to round out the scoring.
The Friars also received a strong effort from freshman Nina Riley (Lexington, Mass.). Riley turned aside 10 shots in her first collegiate outing for the decision.
Providence begins its regular season on the road next weekend, visiting Robert Morris on October 2 and 3. The first regular season home game is October 9, when St. Lawrence comes to town for a 2 p.m. face-off. Tickets are available by calling the Providence College ticket office at 401-865-GOPC.
