NEW HAMPSHIRE OPENS WHEA SEASON WITH 2-1 WIN AT CONNECTICUT
Sarah Cuthbert and Kristina Lavoie score goals for Wildcats

Kristina Lavoie's first period goal held up as the game-winner for UNH

STORRS, Conn. - Jocelyn Slattery (Hugo, Minn.) recorded her first collegiate goal in the second period, but it was not enough as the University of Connecticut women's ice hockey team fell to No. 10 New Hampshire, 2-1 in their 2010-11 season opener.

Slattery scored less than three minutes into the second period, with the assists from seniors Jody Sydor (St. Albert, Alta.) and Jennifer Chaisson (Cumberland, Ont.) to bring the Huskies within one (2-1).

UConn battled to tie the game at the end of the third period, pressuring the Wildcats after pulling Alexandra Garcia (Pointe-Claire, Que.) for the extra attacker with two minutes left in the period. UConn had four shots during that time, including a shot on goal by Chaisson but could not find the equalizer.

New Hampshire posted both of their goals during the first period, with both coming less than one minute apart from each other in the first 10 minutes of the first period.

UNH outshot the Huskies 23-16 during the contest, including a 21-15 advantage in shots on goal.

Kayley Herman recorded the win for the Wildcat's, making 15 saves including eight during the second period. Garcia recorded 21 saves in net for the Huskies with nine coming during the first period.

The Huskies (0-1-0, 0-1-0) return to action next weekend, hosting Clarkson on Saturday (Oct. 9) and St. Lawrence on Sunday (Oct. 10) with both contests beginning at 1:00 p.m.
