CONNECTICUT EDGED BY ST, LAWRENCE, 3-2

Senior forward Jennifer Chaisson picked up a goal for the Huskies

STORRS, Conn. - Despite holding a 2-0 lead after the opening period with goals from Stephanie Raithby (London, Ont.) and Jennifer Chaisson (Cumberland, Ont.), the University of Connecticut women's ice hockey team dropped their second game of the season, 3-2 to St. Lawrence this afternoon in the Mark Edward Freitas Ice Forum.

Raithby put the Huskies up early, scoring just 1:21 into the game when Jocelyn Slattery (Hugo, Minn.) found her on the left side of the net after receiving the puck on the far right side from Jenny Saxon (North Plymouth, Minn.). The opening goal marked the first for Raithby of her collegiate career.

Chaisson gave UConn the two-goal advantage in the 19th minute of the first period when she put the puck past St. Lawrence's Caitlyn Lahonen from the low slot. Taylor Gross (Colorado Springs, Colo.) was credited with the assist, recording her first helper when she passed the puck to Chaisson from the left side of the net.

The Huskies were only able to hold St. Lawrence scoreless for 32 minutes, as Lauren Brozowski posted the first goal of the game for the Saints 12:16 into the second period.

The Saints posted the tying goal 5:53 into the final period, scoring on a power play when Karell Emard put a rebounded shot past Alexandra Garcia (Pointe-Claire, Que.), and then recorded the eventual game-winner six minutes later when Kelly Sabatine was able to put the puck into the back of the net after getting the rebound off of a Saints shot.

With just under two minutes left in the game Garcia was pulled for the extra attacker, but UConn was unable to find the equalizer after struggling to get any shots off during the final minutes.

For the second straight game Garcia posted 34 saves for the Huskies, tying her season-high and coming just short of her career-best again.

The Huskies were outshot 37-14 during the game, including a 17-3 disadvantage during the first period.

The Huskies (1-2-0) continue the 2010-11 season next weekend when they travel to Colgate for a 7:00 p.m. match on Friday (Oct. 15).
