PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The ninth-ranked Providence College women's ice hockey team fell to No. 7 Boston College, 4-2, Sunday at Schneider Arena.

Eagle junior Danielle Welch tallied a hat trick, including the eventual game-winner. Friar junior Laura Veharanta (La Verne, Calif.) scored both goals for the hosts.

The Eagles jumped on top with a pair of first-period strikes. At the 5:09 mark, with BC on the power play, Welch tipped home an Ashley Motherwell slapshot for the 1-0 edge. Then, at 18:12, Welch connected again from the right of the doorstep to send BC into the first intermission with a 2-0 advantage.

Providence responded in the middle period. At 14:08 and on the power play, Veharanta carried to the left circle and fired a wrist shot through the wickets for her seventh of the year.

Veharanta struck again at the 3:35 mark of the third period, against carrying into the zone and shooting from the circle, this time top shelf, to knot the game, 2-2.

The game-winner came less than five minutes later. At 8:14, Welch beat Friar goalie Genevieve Lacasse (Kingston, Ontario) from the slot for her third of the game. BC freshman Melissa Bizarri added an insurance goal at 17:25 to round out the scoring.

Lacasse finished with 20 saves. BC netminder Molly Schaus turned in 29.
