VERMONT FALLS TO BEMIDJI STATE, 4-1

Molly Morrison scored the Catamount goal

BEMIDJI, Minn. -- A four-goal first period lifted Bemidji State to a 4-1 win over Vermont in women's college hockey Saturday afternoon at John Glas Fieldhouse. The Catamounts (4-10-1), who allowed only five goals in their previous three games, were back in action after a 26-day layoff for exams and the holidays.

The four-goal outburst for the WCHA Beavers (2-14-3) came in an eight-minute span midway through the opening stanza where BSU out-shot UVM, 15-5. Lisa Kissick opened the scoring at 8:38 followed by a short-handed goal by Erin Cody at 12:49. Annie Bauerfeld made it 3-0 at 14:25 and Tara Hiscock added another two minutes later.

At 16:04 of the second period, Molly Morrison (So. Burlington, Vt.) scored on the power play on assists from Saleah Morrison (Selkirk, Minn.) and Jackie Thode (Aurora, Colo.) to make it 4-1.

Bemidji State held off the Catamounts in the third period to snap a seven-game winless streak (0-6-1). Kissock and Cody each had an assist in addition to their goals.

The Beavers out-shot UVM, 35-21, for the game. The Cats killed all four BSU power play opportunities. Vermont went one-for-seven on its own power play but it was hurt by the short-handed goal.

UVM goalie Kristen Olychuck (Kelowna, B.C.) settled down after the opening period and finished with 31 saves. At the other end, Emily Brookshaw stopped 20 shots.

The Catamounts take on Bemidji State again Sunday at 3:00 (eastern) before returning home to open a four-game homestand. Vermont rings in the New Year hosting Clarkson, Saturday and Sunday, January 5-6, 2008 at Gutterson Fieldhouse.
