PROVIDENCE DEFEATED BY MERCYHURST, 3-0

Erie, Pa. - The Providence College women's hockey team was defeated by the #3/#4 Mercyhurst Lakers, 3-0 on Sunday, October 29 at the Mercyhurst Ice Arena in Erie, Pa. With the loss, Providence drops to 4-3-0 on the season while the Lakers remain unbeaten with a 7-0-1 record.

After both teams committed 10 penalties in yesterday's first period, it was more of the same on Sunday with a total of nine penalties coming in the first 20 minutes. Mercyhurst took advantage of their chances by scoring the games first goal on a powerplay. Natalie Payne (Mississagua, Ont.) fired a shot from inside the blue line and it was redirected by Julia Colizza (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.) into the back of the net past the diving PC goalie Jana Bugden (Cornerbrook, N.L.). Bugden made 12 saves in the first period.

The physical play carried to the second period with the teams combining for 12 more penalties. Mercyhurst took a two goal lead over a minute into the second period with a four on four goal by Stefanie Bourbeau (Charlesbourg, Que.). The goal for Bourbeau was her team-high eighth on the season. Michelle Bonello (Mississagua, Ont.) tallied the third goal for the Lakers with five minutes remaining in the period on laser passes from Colizza and Meghan Agosta (Ruthven, Ont.).

There was no scoring in the third period as the Lakers posted a 3-0 shutout. Mercyhurst goalie, Laura Hosier (Sharon, Ont.) went the distance in net making 26 saves picking up the shutout good for her sixth win of the season. Bugden finished with 31 saves for Providence. Mercyhurst outshot the Friars 34-26.

Providence will visit Yale on Wednesday, November 8 with start time of 7:00 p.m.
