MAINE DEFEATED BY MERCYHURST, 5-2

Orono, Maine- The University of Maine women's ice hockey team lost their season opener to Mercyhurst, 5-2, on Saturday afternoon at Alfond Arena. Maine's two goals both came from rookie Black Bear's. Fifth ranked Mercyhurst improve to a 1-0-0 record. With the loss the Black Bears fall to 0-1-0.

Freshman Taryn Peacock (Calgary Alberta) scored a power-play goal in the first period to even the score at 1-1. The goal was assisted by sophomore Robyn Law (Markham, Ontario) who is a transfer this year from Mercyhurst and sophomore Vanessa Vani (St. Catherines, Ontario).

The Black Bears couldn't get a lead with Mercyhurst scoring two unanswered goals to bring them ahead 3-1. Maine's second goal of the game was a rebound attempt by freshman Jenna Ouellette (Winnipeg, Manitoba). The assist on the goal is credited to senior Sonia Corriveau (Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec) who had the initial shot.

Even though she earned a loss on the game, sophomore goaltender Genevieve Turgeon (Lac Beauport, Quebec) made an amazing 49 saves. Mercyhurst goalie Laura Hosier made 13 saves in the game.
