VERMONT FALLS TO CLARKSON, 9-0

POTSDAM, N.Y. -- Clarkson exploded for six goals in the first period in cruising to a 9-0 win over Vermont in the 2006-07 women’s hockey opener at Cheel Arena Friday night.

Lindsay Williams and Christine Bailkowski put the Golden Knights on the board with goals in the first 24 seconds of the game. Marie-Jo Gaudet, who also had three assists, would add two more goals in the first stanza. Melissa Marshall also finished with two goals and had two assists on the night for Clarkson.

The Golden Knights outshot Vermont 18-2 in the opening period and 41-9 for the game. UVM did not help its cause in the game by taking 12 penalties allowing Clarkson to cash in with four power play goals.

Shivaun Siegl (Livonia, N.Y.) started in goal for the Catamounts and made 12 saves, all in the first period. Jenilee Roy (Sandown, N.H.) played the final two periods for UVM and stopped 20 shots. Kira Hurley made nine saves in recording the shutout for the Golden Knights.

Vermont and Clarkson conclude the two-game series with another contest Saturday at 2:00pm at Cheel Arena.
