NORTHEASTERN FALLS TO CLARKSON, 5-0

Lindsay Williams scored twice and linemate Ashley Shaidle recorded three points as the Clarkson Golden Knights (13-6-2) defeated the Northeastern Huskies (3-14-1), 5-0, in a non-conference matchup on Friday afternoon at Matthews Arena. The loss marked the first time in almost exactly a year that the Huskies had gone without a goal, a string of 33 games.

Clarkson controlled play for much of the opening period, outshooting the Huskies by a 19-5 margin. Williams got the visitors on the board at the 5:24 mark with her third goal of the season. After Shaidle had her shot from close range denied by NU junior netminder Sarah Belliveau, Williams swooped in to corral the rebound and put it into the back of the net. Belliveau kept her team in the game early, however, by making 18 first-period saves.

The Huskies had some good chances to knot the score in the first period, but were unable to capitalize. Junior Nikki Petrich and freshman Chelsey Jones both had opportunities in front of the Clarkson net, but Clarkson goaltender Stephanie Hansen turned away both chances.

Clarkson continued the pressure in the second period, scoring three times. Christina Valesenti notched her first goal of the season 7:57 into the second period after taking control of a giveaway by NU sophomore Erin Reil at her own blue line and jamming it past Belliveau at the near post. Shaidle scored a goal of her own at the 12:59 mark, taking a pass from Jessica Cloutier in front of the Husky net. Williams then notched her second goal of the game with one minute left in the period after Belliveau came out in an attempt to dive on a loose puck. With the puck still in play and the net empty, Williams got a stick on the puck and directed it into the open cage.

Clarkson's Marie-Jo Gaudet tallied her sixth goal of the season 1:43 into the third period to account for the final score.

Despite the five goals allowed, Belliveau played very well for the Huskies, making some excellent saves to keep her team in the game. Her best save of the afternoon came in the second period, when she sprawled to her left to make a superb kick save to deny Gaudet. Belliveau ended the day with 39 saves, while Hansen made 15 saves for her 10th victory in 11 starts this season.

Northeastern will be back in action tomorrow at 2 p.m. when the Huskies take on another ECAC Hockey League opponent, Saint Lawrence, at Matthews Arena.
