Feldman and Gigliotti each score two goals for PC

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (October 15, 2006) - The Providence College women’s ice hockey team defeated Colgate 5-2 on Sunday, October 15 behind two goals from senior Kristin Gigliotti (Sauquoit, N.Y.) and junior Sarah Feldman (Fall River, Mass.). The Friars improve to 1-1-0 on the season while the Raiders drop to 0-3-1.

The Raiders got on the board first on a powerplay goal from freshman Alie Edell (Mountain Lakes, N.J.). Gigliotti tied the game at 1-1 less than a minute later with a powerplay goal on assists from sophomore Katy Beach (Cleveland, Ohio) and sophomore Mari Pehkonen (Tampere, Finland).

Feldman gave the Friars a lead with five minutes left in the second period with a powerplay goal from Beach. Feldman added another goal six minutes into the third period to give Providence a 3-1 lead. Sophomore Elin Brown (Calgary, Alta.) took a shot towards the right post but it was saved by PC goalie Danielle Ciarletta (Blaine, Minn.). Sophomore Sam Hunt (Calgary, Alta.) grabbed the rebound and found the back of the net to bring the Raiders within one goal at 3-2.

Pehkonen scored her first goal as a Friar midway through the third period to give Providence a 4-2 lead. Gigliotti added an empty net goal with under a minute remaining for her second goal of the game. Ciarletta started in net for the first time as a Friar, picking up the win. She made 24 saves. Raider goalie Brook Wheeler (Brussels, Ont.) made 28 saves.

Providence will be back in action on Wednesday, October 18 against Northeastern at Schneider Arena with a game time start of 7:00 p.m.
