Boston College Wins at Penn State, Vermont Sweeps RPI

HOCKEY EAST HEADLINES

The #2 Northeastern Huskies began their season with a bang, scoring 11 goals in a two-game sweet of league-foe Holy Cross. Senior Chloe Aurard (Villard-de-Lans, France) racked up six points on three goals and three assists, including two shorthanded tallies. Aerin Frankel (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y.) proved once again that she is the best goaltender in college hockey by starting her 2021-22 season with back-to-back blank sheets in league play by kicking out all 35 shots she faced across the pair of contests with the Crusaders.

Boston University earned two wins in league contests, beginning with a 4-2 victory on the road at New Hampshire. Callie Shanahan (Commerce, Mich.) then became the first Terrier rookie since Kerrin Sperry in 2010- 11 to earn a shutout in a 5-0 triumph the next day. Shanahan finished the weekend by not allowing a goal over her final 113:52 of work.

#7 Boston College traveled to Penn State for a pair, emerging with a pair of road wins to begin the season. Thursday’s overtime affair was ended in dramatic fashion when Alexie Guay (Magog, Que.) tallied an assist on the overtime game-winning goal after executing a diving backcheck play in front of the BC net to spark the final offensive rush of the game.

Vermont swept RPI in a two-game homestand, officially kicking off their season and welcoming Catamount fans back to Gutterson Fieldhouse. Natalie Mlynkova (Zlin, Czech Republic) had two goals and two assists while Sini Karjalainen (Posio, Finland) had a tally and one helper the Cats in the two victories.

Chloe Aurard - Northeastern

Chloe Aurard (Sr., F; Villard-de-Lans, France) racked up six points on three goals and three assists, helping power the #2 Northeastern offense to a weekend sweep of Holy Cross. Two of her three tallies came shorthanded, one in each game, as she paced the Huskies to a 2-0-0 start to the year and a combined 11-0, two-shutout weekend.

Callie Shanahan - Boston University

Callie Shanahan (Fr., G; Commerce, Mich.) was sharp in her first two collegiate starts for the Terriers, making 26 saves in her debut, a 4-2 win at New Hampshire, before posting a 16-save shutout the next day at home in a 5-0 triumph. Shanahan finished the weekend by not allowing a goal over her final 113:52 of work. She became the first Terrier rookie since Kerrin Sperry in 2010-11 to earn a shutout. Her best work of the weekend came in the final two periods of Friday’s win, when she made several big stops to keep BU ahead by one until an empty-netter sealed the victory.

Alexie Guay - Boston College

Alexie Guay (Jr., D; Magog, Que.) helped Boston College to a two-win weekend on the road at Penn State. Her defensive efforts paid off for the Eagles, as she tallied an assist on the overtime game-winning goal on Thursday after executing a diving backcheck play in front of the BC net to spark the final offensive rush of the game. She finished the weekend with a plus-two rating, four shots and four blocked shots.

Aerin Frankel - Northeastern

Aerin Frankel (Sr., G; Briarcliff Manor, N.Y.) proved once again that she is the best goaltender in college hockey by starting her 2021-22 season with back-to-back blank sheets in league play against Holy Cross. The reigning National Goaltender of the Year kicked out all 35 shots she faced across the pair of contests with the Crusaders, earning her 29th overall career shutout and adding to her takeover of the Hockey East record books.


HOCKEY EAST TOP PERFORMERS

Hannah Bilka, BC (Jr., F; Coppell, Texas) Bilka had a goal and an assist in a two-win weekend sweep at Penn State. On Friday night, she tallied her assist and scored a game-winning goal, and she finished the weekend series with a plus-2 rating and a blocked shot.

Abby Newhook, BC (Fr., F; St. John’s, Newfoundland) Scored a game-winning goal in overtime of her first collegiate game in Thursday’s season-opening win for BC at Penn State. She finished the weekend with 3 shots on goal.

Abigail Levy, BC (Sr., G; Congers, NY) Levy backstopped BC to a two-win weekend at Penn State to pen their season. She made 36 saves in a 2-1 overtime win on Thursday night and had a 33-save performance in a 2-1 win on Friday. Levy stopped at least 10 shots in four periods, including 15 in Friday night’s third period.

Mackenna Parker, BU (Sr., F; Clavet, Sask.) Parker tallied four points (2g, 2a) and was a team-best plus-5 in a Terriers’ weekend sweep of New Hampshire. She began the weekend with the Terriers’ first goal of the season in a 4-2 road win before matching her career highs in points (3) and assists (2) in a 5-0 home win the next day. Both of Parker’s assists were primary assists, and her unassisted goal on Saturday was thanks to an outstanding individual effort.

Andi Calderone, BU (So, D; Kirkland, Quebec) Calderone had three assists, including a career-high two on Friday night, in the Terriers’ weekend sweep of New Hampshire. Calderone assisted on a game-winning goal on Friday night. She also tied for the team lead with five blocked shots over two games.

Skylar Irving , NU (Fr., F;Kingston, Massachusetts) Irving scored her first career goal in the Huskies season opening win on Friday night against Holy Cross and followed up with another goal on Saturday in a win, completing the 2-0-0 weekend for the Huskies over Holy Cross.

Megan Carter, NU (Jr, D; Milton, Ontario) Carter became the highest scoring defender on the Huskies on opening weekend with a goal and 3 assists across 2 wins for Northeastern over Holy Cross. Her goal on Friday was the first goal of the season for the Huskies.

Natalie Mlynkova, UVM (So., F; Zlin, Czech Republic) Mlýnková had two goals and two assists as Vermont completed a weekend sweep of RPI in their first action of the 2021-22 campaign.

Sini Karjalainen, UVM (Sr., D; Posio, Finland) Karjalainen had a goal and an assist for Vermont in its opening weekend sweep of RPI.
