BOSTON - Behind a Tyler Madden hat trick, the No. 13 Northeastern men's hockey team tamed the Maine Black Bears, 5-2, on Saturday night at Matthews Arena to open the two-game homestand. With the win, Madden extended his point-scoring streak to four games, and the Huskies secured their seventh-consecutive win over the Black Bears in recent history.
Madden opened up scoring for the Huskies early in the first, firing in his first of the night off the feed from fellow linesmen Grant Jozefek and Aidan McDonough at just over a minute into the period. Shortly thereafter, the sophomore scoring sensation recorded his second of the night to put Northeastern at an early two-goal advantage.
After the Black Bears cut the lead halfway through the first frame, Northeastern came out swinging in the second. Ricocheting the puck off the pipe, Zach Solow found his own shot and batted in a power-play goal to send the Huskies to a 3-1 lead. Madden kept the momentum moving for the Huskies, knocking in his third of the night and recording his first career hat trick, before Maine knocked in a second to send the Huskies into the second intermission with a 4-2 lead.
Scoring his fourth power-play goal of the season, McDonough secured the victory for the Huskies at 1:13 into the final frame. With the goal, the freshman extended his point streak to four games and recorded his third multi-point game of the season.
The Huskies return to Matthews Arena tomorrow night in search of the weekend sweep. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m.
