Freshman forward Ben Poisson posted a goal and an assist for the Black Bears

ORONO, Me. - Ben Poisson and Jacob Schmidt-Svejstrup combined for four points and led the University of Maine men's ice hockey team to a 4-2 victory over Hockey East rival, Boston University, on Friday evening.

First Goal (Maine 1-0): On the power play, Ben Poisson scored his first career goal for the Black Bears. Jakub Sirota passed the puck to Jacob Schmidt-Svejstrup who found the unmanned Poisson. Maine grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the first period.

Second Goal (Maine 2-0): Simon Butala forced a turnover that turned into a 2-on-1 fast break for the Black Bears. Ryan Smith led the break alongside Samuel Rennaker. Smith played the puck over to his linemate who beat the BU netminder gloveside, high. Maine held a 2-0 lead after the first period.

Third Goal (Maine 2-1): The Terriers made it a one goal game in the second period with a tally from Jamie Armstrong. Both of the squads had four players on the ice. BU forced a turnover, Matthew Quercia played the puck ahead, and Armstrong did the rest. Maine was leading by a goal after two periods in the Alfond.

Fourth Goal (Maine 3-1): Jacob Schmidt-Svejstrup doubled Maine's advantage in the third period with a beautiful goal. Sirota started the breakaway with a pass to Poisson. The freshman found Schmidt-Svejstrup who buried the puck.

Fifth Goal (Maine 3-2): Patrick Curry did his best to bridge the gap with a goal at 18:10 in the third period. An extra skater gave BU an advantage, which resulted in their final goal of the Hockey East match-up.

Sixth Goal (Maine 4-2): Tim Doherty finished the scoring with an empty net goal. Jack Quinlivan won the face-off back to Doherty who scored a 200-foot goal. Maine held onto the 4-2 lead for their second conference win of the 2019-20 season.


Notes:

Jeremy Swayman finished with 39 saves, while Sam Tucker tallied 31 for BU.

Maine went 1-4 on the power play, as the Terriers were 0-2 on their man advantages.

The Black Bears blocked 15 shots during the win.

The two Hockey East foes will square off once again tomorrow, November 2nd. Puck-drop for the Saturday night game is scheduled for 6:00 pm.
