CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Marek Korencik's left point shot found the upper right corner through a screen with nine minutes left in regulation, lifting No. 14 UMass Lowell past fourth-ranked Boston College 3-2 on Friday night at Kelley Rink.
The teams split their two-game regular season series, each winning 3-2 on the other's home ice. The Eagles fell to 16-8-1 (10-6-0 HEA), while the River Hawks improved to 14-7-5 (8-4-4 HEA).
Along with Maine, the two teams are locked in a three-way tie for second place in Hockey East with 20 points, two back of UMass.
Rookie Alex Newhook scored for the third straight game and posted his second consecutive multi-point performance. The goal came shorthanded for BC's nation-best seventh of the year and Newhook's second individually.
Ben Finkelstein also collected his fourth goal of the season on the power play early in the third period.
Newhook handed Boston College the lead five minutes into the middle frame, but Carl Berglund and Kenny Hausinger responded for Lowell. Finkelstein's power play wrister brought the Eagles even before Korencik's point shot proved to be the game-winner.
The schools each finished with 25 shots on goal and a power play goal.
