New Hampshire Edged By Army West Point, 5-4

WEST POINT, N.Y. - Michael Wilson scored the game-winner in the third period for the Black Knights as the University of New Hampshire men's hockey team fell to Army West Point, 5-4, in front of a sold-out crowd of 2,614 at Tate Rink on Sunday afternoon.

With the loss, the Wildcats fall to 8-8-1 overall, while the Black Knights improve to 13-5-1.

UP NEXT: UNH will return to the Whittemore Center on Friday, Jan. 3 versus Yale and Saturday, Jan. 4 against Brown. Both games are on NESN at 7 p.m. On Friday there will be $1 hot dogs and the third set of trading cards will be given away to the first 1,000 fans, while Saturday is Youth Night as the Wildcats will hold a postgame autograph session. HOW IT HAPPENED

• Only 23 seconds after the opening face-off, senior forward Liam Blackburn (Prince George, British Columbia) gave the Wildcats a 1-0 lead with his third goal of the game. Sophomore forward Angus Crookshank (North Vancouver, British Columbia) and junior assistant captain Charlie Kelleher (Longmeadow, Mass.) each posted an assist on the goal.

• The Black Knights then responded with two straight goals by Dominic Franco to take a 2-1 lead. Franco's first goal was on the power play at 5:52, while his second was at 7:18.

• The Wildcats tied the contest at 2-2 when junior assistant captain Patrick Grasso (Ankeny, Iowa) tipped a shot by junior defenseman Max Gildon (Plano, Texas) to the back of the net at 9:24. Junior forward Kohei Sato (Nishitokyo, Japan) also posted an assist on the goal.

• Each team tallied eight shots, while the Black Knights went 1-2 on the power play.

• At 1:54 of the second period, Anthony Firriolo gave the Black Knights a 3-2 advantage when he found back of the net.

• Sophomore forward Filip Engarås (Stockholm, Sweden) tied the game at 3-3 at 8:38 as he sent a wrist shot to the upper glove side of the net.

• UNH then took a 4-3 lead at 13:22 as junior forward Eric MacAdams (Slaem, Mass.) fired a shot to the upper corner of the net past the glove side.

• UNH outshot Army by an 8-7 margin, while the Wildcats went 0-2 on the man-advantage and the Black Knights went 0-1.

• Alex Wilkinson made it a 4-4 game when he scored 53 seconds after the start of the third period.

• At 2:35, the Black Knights were called for a major penalty but the Wildcats were unable to take advantage of the power play as the game remained tied at 4-4.

• Then at 10:08, Michael Wilson scored to give the Black Knights a 5-4 lead.

• With 1:19 left in the third period, the Wildcats went with an extra skater but were unable to score the equalizer for the 5-4 final score.
