ORONO, Maine -- Patrick Shea and Ryan Smith combined for six points in the University of Maine men ice hockey team's, 5-1, victory over American International College on Sunday afternoon in the Alfond Arena.
First Goal (Maine 1-0): Veli-Matti Tiuraniemi scored the game's first goal 00:59 into the first period. Mitchell Fossier and Eduards Tralmaks combined to find the defenseman waiting patiently on the blue line. Tiuraniemi's wrister was his first goal of the 2019-20 season.
Second Goal (Maine 2-0): The Black Bears scored their second goal of the first period when Patrick Shea scored his first short handed goal of the season. Ryan Smith stole the puck and found his streaking linemate for the breakaway tally.
Third Goal (Maine 3-0): Shea and Smith paired up for one more goal in the opening frame. The two seniors gave their squad a very early 3-0 lead.
Fourth Goal (Maine 3-1): Off of a broken stick, Joel Kocur narrowed the deficit to two goals. Jeff Baum's broken stick set up the Yellow Jackets' first tally of the non-conference match-up.
Fifth Goal (Maine 4-1): AJ Drobot etched his name in the scoring column with his second goal of the year. As has been the case with most of tonight's goal, Shea and Smith were both credited with a point.
Sixth Goal (Maine 5-1): Mitchell Fossier, the captain, finished the game with an unassisted goal with just over three minutes remaining in the contest. Maine held onto the 5-1 lead for their ninth and final victory of 2019.
Notes: Jeremy Swayman finished with 42 saves, while Zackarias Skog and Stefano Durante tallied 44 for AIC.
Maine went 0-2 on the power play, as the Yellow Jackets were 0-6 on their man advantages.
The Black Bears blocked two shots as a team.
Next: Maine returns to the ice Friday, January 3rd. Puck drop against Nebraska Omaha in the Alfond is scheduled for 6:00 pm.
