BOSTON, Mass. - Junior Jake Oettinger posted his 11th career shutout and the Terriers got third-period goals from sophomore Ty Amonte and freshman Joel Farabee to earn a 2-0 home victory over UConn on Saturday evening at Agganis Arena.
After two scoreless periods, Amonte scored 1:27 into the third before Farabee added an insurance shorthanded tally with under five minutes to play.
BU ended a six-game losing streak and improved to 11-15-3 overall and 9-8-2 in Hockey East play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Oettinger and the Terrier defense were strong from the get-go, limiting quality chances and preventing the Huskies from putting together sustained possessions.
- BU had the best chance of the opening period off a rush but UConn netminder Tomas Vomacka denied Curry twice, once with his lower pad and once with his skate.
- The Terriers mustered only two shots in the middle stanza and the first penalty of the game, which was on BU, didn't come until late in the period.
- Early in the third, Amonte set up a great look for fellow sophomore Cam Crotty but Vomacka was up to the task, making a huge save.
- Amonte, however, crashed the net and poked in the puck at the top of the crease before Vomacka could secure it, opening the scoring in the process.
- The Huskies got a power-play chance with 6:17 remaining but only managed one shot on goal.
- A hip check by senior Ryan Cloonan at the top of the BU zone created a turnover late in the power play, allowing sophomore Kasper Kotkansalo to find Farabee along the boards.
- The rookie skated in through the left circle before flinging a perfectly placed wrister high stick side at 15:42 for his second shorthanded goal of the season.
GAME NOTES
- BU won its season series with the Huskies, two games to one.
- Oettinger was playing in his 100th career game, becoming the fourth BU netminder to reach the milestone.
- The junior goaltender is now just two shutouts away from BU's career record of 13, held by John Curry and Jack Ferreira.
- Farabee's goal was the Terriers' ninth shorthanded tally this season, tying them with Niagara for the nation lead.
- Vomacka finished the night with 26 saves as BU held a 28-26 shot advantage.
UP NEXT
- The Terriers return to action next weekend with a two-game series at Vermont beginning on Friday (Feb. 22).
- Both games start at 7 p.m.
