LOWELL, Mass. - The UMass Lowell Hockey team was defeated by Merrimack College, 2-1 in overtime in the opening game of the Hockey East playoffs best of three first round series on Friday night at the Tsongas Center.

With the loss, the River Hawks drop to 17-18-0 overall, while the Warriors improve to 11-19-4 overall with the victory.

Merrimack's Ludvig Larsson scored the overtime winner with 1:59 to play in the extra session for his 12th tally of the season. Jace Hennig tied the game for the Warriors at 1-1 with just 4:27 left in regulation for his 10th goal of the year.

Junior forward Connor Wilson (Calgary, Alta.) opened the scoring in the game for his seventh of the season off a Merrimack turnover with 4:08 left in the opening frame.

Junior Christoffer Hernberg (Espoo, Finland) tied a career-high with 39 saves in the losing effort, which included 14 saves in the overtime session. Craig Pantano totaled 32 saves in his 10th win of the season for the Warriors.

Freshman forward Charlie Levesque (Russell, Ont.) registered a game-high 15 face off wins for the River Hawks.

UMass Lowell returns to action for game two of the first round series on Saturday, March 3rd vs. the Warriors. Game time from the Tsongas Center is 7 p.m.
