BURLINGTON, Vt. - The UMass Lowell Hockey team earned a 5-2 victory against Harvard on Friday night in the opening game of the Catamount Cup on the campus of the University of Vermont.

The River Hawks improve to 10-8 overall with the victory, while the Crimson fall to 4-6-1 overall with the loss.

Sophomore forward Kenny Hausinger (Anchorage, Alaska) scored his team-leading seventh goal of the season to increase UMass Lowell's lead to 4-2 with 11:49 left in the contest. Senior forward John Edwardh (Calgary, Alta.) scored an empty-netter with 1:08 left to seal the win for the River Hawks, after Harvard pulled its goalie with 2:12 left in the contest.

Senior captain Tyler Mueller (Regina, Sask.) gave the River Hawks a 2-1 lead with his third of the season on a backhander with 16:37 left in the second period. Eddie Ellis tied the game at 2-2 for the Crimson at 17:35 of the second. Junior forward Ryan Dmowski (East Lyme, Conn.) scored his fifth goal of season from his knees for the River Hawks to give the team a 3-2 lead with 1:35 left in the period.

Ryan Donato scored the first goal of the game for Harvard just 32 seconds into the contest for his ninth goal of the season. UMass Lowell junior forward Nick Master (Broomall, Pa.) tied the game at 1-1 just three minutes later for the River Hawks.

Junior goaltender Christoffer Hernberg (Espoo, Finland) made 24 saves in his 10th win of the season, which included 12 saves in the opening frame. His counterpart Michael Lackey from the Crimson totaled 26 stops.

Dmowski and Mueller each tallied a game-high six shots on goal for the River Hawks. Redshirt-freshman Chris Schutz (Keller, Texas) had an impressive collegiate debut for UMass Lowell, registering a +3 plus/minus rating.

UMass Lowell outshot Harvard, 14-2 in the third period. The River Hawks were a perfect 3-for-3 on the penalty kill in the game.

The River Hawks return to action on Saturday, December 30th against ECAC foe St. Lawrence in the finale of the Catamount Cup. UMass Lowell won the first meeting (5-0) against the Saints on Oct. 21st in Canton, N.Y. Game time is 4 p.m. from Gutterson Fieldhouse in Burlington, Vt.
