HARTFORD, Conn. - UMass Lowell junior goaltender Christoffer Hernberg turned away 33 shots as the River Hawks swept a Hockey East series from the UConn Huskies, 1-0, Saturday afternoon at the XL Center.
The Huskies were shutout for the second time this season and drop to 2-6-1 in Hockey East and 3-10-2 overall with the loss. The River Hawks sweep their second-straight Hockey East weekend and are now 5-5-0 in league play, 8-6-0 overall.
UConn outshot the River Hawks, 33-15, and nearly doubled them up on shot attempts, 68-39 but couldn't crack Hernberg who records his second shutout of the season.
The River Hawks got the only goal they would need at 7:10 of the second period with junior Connor Wilson finishing off a feed from sophomore Kenny Hausinger.
The Huskies got 15 saves from Adam Huska (Zvolen, Slovakia) in the loss. Both teams were 0-for-3 on the power play
Both teams skated to a scoreless first period with UML holding a 7-6 edge on shots. Both teams got a power play chance in the first but came up empty.
UMass Lowell ended the scoreless tie at 7:10 of the second period with Wilson scoring his third on the season. The Huskies had possession of the puck in the UML zone but Kenny Hausinger broke up a pass and chipped it into the neutral zone to set up a 2-on-1 chance. Hausinger dished to Wilson on the left wing and he buried it stick side for 1-0 lead.
The Huskies controlled play for much of the period and outshot UML 15-3 in the second. UConn came-up empty on their second power play chance of the night.
UConn held a 12-3 shot advantage in the third and came up empty on their lone power play chance. The Huskies pulled Huska with 2:07 left to play and kept the River Hawks hemmed in the zone for much of the final two minutes. UConn peppered Herberg in the closing minutes but could not find the equalizer.
UMass Lowell sweeps the seasons series from UConn for the first time since the Huskies joined Hockey East in 2014-15. They lead the all-time series, 22-10-2.
UConn held UMass Lowell to a season-low 15 shots. The Huskies are now 0-4-0 in one goal games this season.
The Huskies will be on the road Tuesday night, November 21 to take on the Vermont Catamounts before returning home next Saturday, November 25 to host RIT in a non-conference match-up.
