ORONO, Maine - Blaine Byron scored two first period goals and finished the hat trick with an empty net goal in the third period to lead the University of Maine men's ice hockey team to a 5-2 win over No. 5 UMass Lowell on Friday night at the Alfond Arena.

Maine improves to 4-5-2 overall and 1-2-0 in Hockey East while UMass-Lowell falls to 6-3-2 and 2-1-0 in league play.

The Black Bears got on the board first just 37 seconds into the contest when Byron was to the goalie's right and put back a rebound that first hit the post, then the goalie, and slid in.

Gage Hough tied it up for UMass Lowell on a breakaway 7:20 into the period, but Byron put Maine ahead 24 seconds later when there was a scramble in front of the net and the puck slid behind the goalie to Byron with a wide open net.

The River Hawks tied the game right before intermission when John Edwardh tipped it by McGovern.

It looked like the two teams would go into the second intermission tied, but with UMass-Lowell on the powerplay, the Black Bears broke out on a three-on-two with just seconds remaining. Cam Brown skated towards the net and slid the puck to Rob Michel who beat goalie high over his stick side.

Brown made it 4-2 Maine 9:27 into the third when he came around from behind the net to put home a rebound off a Brendan Robbins shot.

Byron completed his hat trick 18:16 into the third to make it 5-2.

Rob McGovern played well in net for Maine, notching 31 saves while Tyler Wall made 22 for the River Hawks. Maine was 0-5 on the power play while UMass Lowell was 0-4.

The two teams meet again on Sunday in Lowell, Mass. Puck drop is at 3 p.m.
