LOWELL, Mass. - The No. 10 UMass Lowell men's hockey team (18-9-3, 10-7-1 HEA) clipped No. 3 Boston University (19-8-2 11-5-2 HEA), 3-2, in an exciting come-from-behind win in Hockey East action Friday night in front of 6,220 fans at the Tsongas Center.
Freshman forward Kenny Hausinger (Anchorage, Alaska) slapped the home a loose rebound with 11 minutes remaining in regulation to net the game-winning goal. Freshman goaltender Tyler Wall (Leamington, Ont.) made 21 saves on the night en route to his 17th win of the year, which included 15 third-period saves.
"We are very happy with the outcome tonight," said Head Coach Norm Bazin. "It was a game of special teams. They are a very good hockey club and it is nice to get points from those teams. When you get to the end of the year you need both good goaltending and good special teams and tonight we had both.
Both teams came out fast and strong as each squad posted a goal in the first four minutes of opening puck drop. UMass Lowell senior forward Joe Gambardella (Staten Island, N.Y.) drew blood first with a wrist flick that rung top shelf at 1:35 to provide the River Hawks with the 1-0 lead. Boston University struck back with a goal of their own at 3:22 thanks to Patrick Harper's slap shot past Wall. Despite an 8-3 lead in shots by the River Hawks, the score remained knotted 1-1 after the first 20 minutes of play.
After a pair of miscues left the Terries defending a five-on-three power play, Boston University made the best of their situation with a short handed tally to grab their first lead of the game, 2-1, in the second period.
UMass Lowell didn't trail for long thanks to freshman forward Ryan Lohin (Chadds Ford, Pa.) who picked up his eighth goal of the season with an equalizer at 11:05 in the second frame. Junior forward Ryan Collins (Newton, Mass.) and sophomore defenseman Niklas Folin (Kungsbacka, Sweden) were awarded the assist after setting up Lohin with a slap shot in front of the net.
The third period saw its third lead change of the night, and final goal of the tilt, following a power play goal by Hausinger and the River Hawks at 8:53. Hausinger's game-winner was his seventh tally on the year.
UMass Lowell went on to out shoot Boston University 26-21 in the contest, while successfully killing off all five Terrier power plays.
The River Hawks return to action on Saturday, February 11 against conference opponent Massachusetts. The game will be held at the Tsongas Center and is slated to begin at 7:05 p.m.
