NOTRE DAME, Ind. - Including a pair of Jordan Gross goals, the No. 18 Notre Dame hockey team built a 3-0 lead against Hockey East foe Northeastern on Thursday night and went on to post a 3-2 win at the Compton Family Ice Arena (4,418).

With the win, Notre Dame improved to 3-0-0 in Hockey East play (5-2-2 overall).

Gross scored a power-play goal at 5:54 of the first period and then added a tally at 13:18 of the opening frame to give the Irish a 2-0 lead after one.

"He (Jordan) just has savvy and is smart, he has poise," Head Coach Jeff Jackson said. "He's deceptive at the blue line because he has the ability to open up shot lanes and he gets the puck through."

Gross is now second in the country in goals by a defenseman with five on the season.

"They always tell us it doesn't have to be the most powerful shot as long as you get it through," Gross said. "Like you saw tonight, my first goal was just about putting it on net."

Andrew Oglevie then netted what proved to be the game winner at 3:05 of the second period.

Northeastern tried to stage a comeback when Zach Aston-Reese and Brendan Collier scored back-to-back goals 28 seconds apart midway through the second period.

"We had a couple blunders there," Jackson said. "We went back in our own zone one time and it ended up in our net and then we didn't get the puck by their defense and that's the strength of their team - they capitalize."

But the Irish defense and penalty kill unit took over to seal the win.

Notre Dame was forced to kill off a five minute major as the second period came to a close, but some big shot blocks combined with timely saves from Cal Petersen kept it a 3-2 game after two.

"The good thing is we responded with that (penalty) kill," Jackson added. "That was huge, it's a coordinated effort and it all started with face-offs."

In the third period, the Irish held Northeastern to an 0-for-2 mark on the power play and Petersen made nine saves.

"Cal made some big saves, especially at the end," Jackson added. "He stood tall for us in that key situation and that's the closer that he has to be. He's done that two or three times this year where he has to make that big save in the third."

In the Northeastern net, Ryan Ruck finished with 28 saves, while Petersen totaled 23 for the Irish.

Notre Dame (5-2-2, 3-0-0 HEA) finished 1-for-3 on the power play, while Northeastern (1-8-1, 0-4-1 HEA) was 0-for-4.

Notre Dame and Northeastern close out their two-game series tomorrow night (Nov. 13) at 7:35 p.m. at the Compton Family Ice Arena. With the men's basketball and women's soccer teams also playing on campus tomorrow evening, fans attending the game are encouraged to allow extra time for parking.

Goals

-- The Irish took a 1-0 lead at 5:54 of the first period on Jordan Gross' fourth goal of the season. While on the power play, Steven Fogarty left a puck off for Sam Herr along the far boards. Herr found Gross at the near point and the sophomore defenseman moved towards the middle of the ice before sending a wrist shot high past Ryan Ruck with Herr providing the screen in front.

-- Gross made it 2-0 at 13:18 of the first period when he crashed the net following his own shot and knocked a rebound into an empty net from just outside the crease. Jake Evans dropped a pass off for Dylan Malmquist, who fired a shot towards the goal that rebounded out to Gross, who did the rest.

-- The Irish took a 3-0 lead at 3:05 of the second period on freshman Andrew Oglevie's first career goal. Jake Evans won an offensive zone faceoff back to Oglevie at the top of the circle, who played the puck behind the net. Evans picked it up and made a pass back to an open Oglevie in the slot, who's quick release beat Ruck high.

-- Northeastern got on the board at 6:40 of the second period when Zach Aston-Reese scored his first goal of the season. Nolan Stevens threw a puck in front from behind the net that John Stevens pushed towards the goal and then Reese knocked it low past Petersen.

-- Northeastern cut it to a 3-2 game 28 seconds later when Brendan Collier tipped a Ryan Rosenthal pass low past Petersen on a three-on-two rush, with the second assist going to Dalen Hedges.
