NOTRE DAME, Ind. - Led by a Jordan Gross game-winning goal scored with under two minutes to play in the third period, the No. 18 Notre Dame Fighting Irish posted a thrilling 4-3 win over Minnesota on Friday night at the Compton Family Ice Arena (5,022).

Notre Dame led 3-1 in the third period on goals by Anders Bjork, Dylan Malmquist and Jordan Gross. But, while the Irish were trying to kill off a five-minute major, Minnesota made it a 3-3 game on a pair of power play goals, including a 5-on-3 tally by Leon Bristedt and 5-on-4 goal by Hudson Fasching.

After Fasching tied the game at the 16:38 mark, Notre Dame was able to kill off 40 more seconds of the Gopher power play, setting the stage for Gross' game winner.

"I'm proud of the way our guys responded," Head Coach Jeff Jackson said. "You give up two (power play) goals, you still have 40 seconds to kill on the power play so you worry about being deflated but we came back and scored that next shift."

The game-winning goal came at 18:04 when, from the near point, Bjork connected a pass to Jake Evans at the bottom the faceoff circle to Golden Gopher goaltender Eric Schierhorn's right. Gross made his way from the far point to the far post, collected a quick feed from Evans and then the sophomore defenseman from Maple Grove, Minn., notched his second career game winner.

"Jake Evans had an open lane coming up the slot so I just kind of went to the backdoor and he made an unbelievable pass to me," Gross said. "I just threw it on net and it went in."

Minnesota pressed for the game-tying goal and pulled Schierhorn for the final 52 seconds of the game but, led by goaltender Cal Petersen, the Irish defense helped preserve the win.

Petersen finished with 31 saves in the Notre Dame (4-1-2, 2-0-0 HEA) net, including 17 in the third period. Schierhorn made 34 stops for the Golden Gophers (2-4-0, 0-0-0 B1G).

Notre Dame finished the night 0-for-2 on the power play, while Minnesota was 2-for-4, including a 5-on-3 tally.

The Irish and Golden Gophers close out their weekend series at 6:40 p.m. tomorrow (Nov. 7) evening. The game will be broadcast by the NBC Sports Network (NBCSN) and will be preceded by a Parents' Night ceremony.

Goals

-- Notre Dame took a 1-0 lead at 4:34 of the second period when Anders Bjork's wrist shot from the right circle off a Thomas DiPauli feed resulted in his second goal in as many games. Dennis Gilbert passed the puck out of the defensive zone to DiPauli, who rushed through the neutral zone before finding Bjork.

-- At 7:29 of the second, Leon Bristedt tied it up at 1-1 when he finished from just outside the crease after a short Hudson Fasching pass from the slot. Fasching got the puck after Jack Sadek broke up a Notre Dame breakout attempt.

-- Dylan Malmquist restored the Irish lead at 12:46 of the second period when he beat Schierhorn from the bottom of the near faceoff circle with a high wrist shot for his team-leading fifth goal of the season, with assists going to Jake Evans and Luke Ripley.

-- After killing off Minnesota's first penalty of the night, the Irish struck at the other end when Jordan Gross' shot from the high slot beat Schierhorn through the legs while the Irish skated in on a 4-on-3 rush. Bjork and Andrew Oglevie assisted on the goal, scored at 19:17 of the second period.

-- Minnesota cut it to a 3-2 lead at 14:51 of the third period when Bristedt scored his second of the night while the Golden Gophers had a 5-on-3 advantage. His shot from the high slot beat Petersen, who was screened in front.

-- Then with a 5-on-4 advantage, Minnesota made it a 3-3 game at 16:38 of the third when Hudson Fasching slammed in a rebound that Tommy Novak kept alive in front following a Michael Brodzinski shot from the point.

-- The game-winning goal came at 18:04 when, from the near point, Bjork connected a pass to Jake Evans at the bottom the faceoff circle to Gopher goaltender Eric Schierhorn's right. Gross made his way from the far point to the far post, collected a feed from Evans and then the sophomore defenseman from Maple Grove, Minn., notched his second career game winner.
