BOSTON - The No. 11/12 Boston University men's ice hockey team dropped a 4-2 contest to Vermont on Friday evening in the opener of a weekend series at Agganis Arena.

BU opened the scoring less than nine minutes into the contest on junior Tommy Kelley's first goal of the season, but the visitors took the lead before the first intermission on a power-play goal followed by tally off a turnover just 86 seconds later.

Senior assistant captain Matt Lane made it a 2-2 affair at 7:12 of the third before the Catamounts regained the lead for good just over three minutes later. An empty-netter in the final second of regulation sealed the 4-2 win for Vermont.

Each team recorded 30 shots in the contest. Junior Mike Santaguida made 28 saves for Vermont while senior Sean Maguire turned aside 27 shots in the BU goal.

BU had four power-play chances - all coming in the middle stanza - but was unable to capitalize on any them. The Catamounts went 1-of-4 with the man advantage.

The Terriers fall to 7-5-3 overall and 3-3-2 in Hockey East play while the Catamounts improve to 4-9-2 with a 3-4-2 conference mark.

Kelley's goal came on a slap shot from the center point at 8:41 of the first period with assists from sophomore Brandon Fortunato and senior Mike Moran.

Junior Anthony Petruzzelli got the power-play equalizer for Vermont on a seeing-eye shot from the right circle that Maguire was unable to track. Senior Alexx Privitera got his first of two assists on the night and freshman Mike Lee picked up his first assist as a Catamount.

Moments later, BU had a pass picked off high in their own zone by UVM sophomore Kevin Irwin before classmate Jarrid Privitera skated in and poked the puck past the goal line for his team-best sixth tally of the season.

Neither team found the back of the net in the second period despite a combined six power plays.

Lane brought life to the BU bench in the third when he spun around and scored from the high slot on assists from freshmen Jordan Greenway and Ryan Cloonan.

Junior Brendan Bradley got the game winner for the visitors when he was wide open in the slot and had a lot of net to work with following a pass by freshman Liam Coughlin, who later added the empty netter to create the 4-2 final.

The teams will wrap up their weekend series on Saturday (Dec. 5). Game time is set for 4 p.m.
