MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- Sophomore forward Evan Campbell (Port Coquitlam, B.C.) recorded a game-high three points (1g,2a) to lead the No. 7 ranked UMass Lowell hockey team to a 7-3 victory against RIT in the opening game of the Mariucci Classic on Friday afternoon.

With the win, UMass Lowell moves to 13-3-3 overall on the season, while RIT falls to 5-9-3 overall. It marked the fourth time this season that the River Hawks had scored six or more goals in a game. UMass Lowell finished the night 2-for-4 with the man advantage, which snapped RIT's streak of 32 straight kills.

Junior forward Michael Fallon (Glenview, Ill.) got the River Hawks on the scoreboard first just 1:31 into the game scoring off a rebound for his fourth goal of the season. Campbell upped the lead to 2-0 against the Tigers with his fifth goal of the season with 6:51 left in the first period. The teams went to the locker room with 13 shots apiece in the opening frame.

In the second period, senior defenseman Zack Kamrass (Atlanta, Ga.) made a 3-0 contest with a wrist shot from the right point. Junior forward Ryan McGrath (O'Fallon, Mo.) extended the River Hawks lead to four goals seven minutes later with a wrist shot in the slot. RIT's Danny Smith got the Tigers on the board with a penalty shot goal at 13:21 of the second period off a slashing penalty by Michael Kapla. Sophomore defenseman Dylan Zink (Madison, Wis.) made it a 5-1 game with a goal right in front of the RIT net off a cross crease pass from Terrence Wallin (Yardley, Pa.).

Junior forward Robert Francis (San Diego, Calif.) gave UMass Lowell a 6-2 lead just 2:36 into the third period on the backhander that beat MacLean glove side, while junior forward Adam Chapie (Oxford, Mich.) finished off the scoring for the River Hawks with 12:15 left in the game. RIT added two goals in the third frame from Josh Mitchell and Caleb Cameron.

UMass Lowell outshot RIT, 43-31, for the game, which included a 15-9 shot advantage in the second and third period. Campbell and senior blueliner Jake Suter (Lac du Flambeau, Wis.) each tallied a team-high four shots on goal.

Junior goaltender Kevin Boyle (Manalapan, N.J.) stopped 28 shots in his 10th win of the season for the River Hawks, while Jordan Ruby made 23 saves in 40 minutes of action for RIT. Ken MacLean played the final 20 minutes in the Tigers' net making 13 stops.

The River Hawks return to action on Saturday, January 3rd against Merrimack or Minnesota in the Championship Game of the Mariucci Classic in Minneapolis, Minn. Game time is either 4 p.m. or 7 p.m. (CT).
