ORONO, Maine - Brian Morgan (Windham, N.H.) scored 53 seconds into overtime to propel the University of Maine men's ice hockey team past UMass 6-5 on Friday night. Maine improves to 2-4-1 on the season with the win and opens Hockey East play 1-0-0. UMass falls to 2-4-0, 1-3-0 in conference action.

Maine opened the scoring just 3:58 into the first period with a power play goal by Malcolm Hayes (Atlanta, Georgia). Morgan had the initial shot that UMass goalie Henry Dill saved, but the rebound when right to Hayes who fired it into the back of the net for his second goal of the season.

Maine added to its lead at 11:27 when Jack Musil (Hull, England) had the puck on the wall and found Ben Hutton (Prescott, Ontario) just inside the blueline. His shot was saved, but the rebound went right to Cam Brown (Natick, Mass.) who was on the goalpost. Brown beat Dill for his team-leading fourth goal of the season.

Maine extended its lead to 3-0 at 1:19 of the second period. Blaine Byron (Manotick, Ontario) carried the puck into the offensive zone and dropped it for Liam Pecararo (Canton, Massachusetts). Pecararo's shot was blocked, but Steven Swavely (Reading, Pennsylvania) got a stick on the deflected puck and fired it past Dill.

UMass then scored three straight goals to tie the game at 3-3 late in the second period. Dennis Kravchenko received a pass from Troy Power and carried the puck up the ice. He faked going glove side on Maine goalie Matt Morris (Ridgewood, New Jersey) before keeping the puck and sliding it past Morris after he had committed. Kravchenko pulled the Minutemen to within one goal at 13:05 when he carried the puck around the net and banked it off a Maine defender. Oleg Yevenko assisted on the play.

UMass tied the game just over two minutes later. Frank Vatrano carried the puck up the ice on an odd-man rush. He slid the puck to Ray Pigozzi who beat Morris.

Maine took the lead back with 20 seconds to go in the second period. Connor Leen (Chester, N.Y.) made a great play to steal the puck from a UMass player. He fed Devin Shore (Ajax, Ontario) who carried the puck behind the net and side it just inside the goal post.

Maine extended its lead to 5-3 at 3:49 of the third period when Pecararo had a shot that Dill stopped, but Swavely cleaned up the rebound and shot it into the back of the net. Nolan Vesey (North Reading, Massachusetts) began the play for the Black Bears.

UMass pulled to within one goal when Power found Patrick Lee along in front of Morris. Power fed Lee the puck and he one-timed it past Morris. The Minutemen force overtime when Lee found a trailing Mike Busillo, who had his shot beat Morris from the top of the face-off circle.

Maine wasted little time in overtime. Conor Riley (Massena, New York) gained control of the puck and carried it up the ice. He found Shore who passed to Morgan in the face-off circle. Morgan ripped a shot that beat Dill and went just inside the goal post, giving Maine the 6-5 win.

Maine outshot UMass 36-28 in the game. The Black Bears were 1-for-3 on the power play, while UMass was scoreless in its lone chance.

Morris made 23 saves and improves to 2-2-1 on the season. Dill made 30 saves and falls to 2-2-0.
