ORONO, Me. - The University of Maine men's ice hockey team completed a weekend sweep with a 3-1 victory over Canisius on Saturday night at Alfond Arena. Nolan Vesey (No. Reading, Mass.) had a goal and an assist in the game for the Black Bears, while Devin Shore (Ajax, Ontario) finished with a pair of assists.

Maine improves to 6-13-1 on the season, while Canisius falls to 6-8-5.

Maine struck first at 15:40 of the opening frame when Blaine Byron (Manotick, Ontario) collected the rebound of a Shore shot and beat Canisius netminder Reilly Turner. For Byron, it was his team-leading ninth goal of the season. Vesey also assisted on the goal.

Canisius knotted the score at a goal apiece less than two minutes later when Cody Freeman redirected the puck to Ralph Cuddemi, who was stationed to the right of Maine goalie Sean Romeo (Cary, North Carolina). Mitch McCrank also earned an assist on the goal.

Will Merchant (Eagan, Minn.) scored what proved to be the game-winner less than a minute later. Shore stole the puck in the neutral zone. He found Connor Leen (Chester, N.Y.) who passed to Merchant who beat Turner for his second goal of the season from the slot.

Vesey added an insurance goal for the Black Bears at 6:10 of the second period. Mark Hamilton (Winthrop, Mass.) began the play and found Liam Pecararo (Canton, Mass.) who skated the puck up the ice and got it to Vesey. Vesey then fired it into the back of the goal for his second goal of the weekend and fourth of the season.

Maine outshot Canisius 39-26 in the game. The Black Bears were 1-for-2 on the power play, while Canisius finished 1-for-3.

Maine goalie Romeo made 25 saves in the game en route to his fourth win of the season. He improves to 4-9-0. Turner made 36 saves and falls to 4-3-2.

The Black Bears return to action on Friday, Jan. 9 when they travel to UMass for a pair of non-conference games.
