ORONO, Maine - The University of Maine men's ice hockey team got goals from four different players, while rookie netminder Sean Romeo (Cary, North Carolina) made 28 saves as the Black Bears opened the second half of the season with a 4-1 win over Canisius.

Maine struck first at 4:55 of the opening stanza. Conor Riley (Massena, N.Y.) got the puck to Blaine Byron (Manotick, Ontario) who circled with it in the offensive zone, before dishing it back to Riley just inside the blueline. His shot eluded the Canisius defense and found the back of the net for his first goal of the season.

Canisius tied the game just over five minutes later. Josh Kielich passed the puck to Doug Beck who has his shot from the side of the crease stopped by Maine goalie Romeo. The puck came right out to Doug Jessey and he shot the puck past Romeo for his second goal of the season.

Maine grabbed the lead at 13:01 of the second period when Nolan Vesey (No. Reading, Mass.) stole the puck in the neutral zone and got a step on the defense for a partial breakaway. He was able to beat Canisius netminder Keegan Asmundson five hole. For Vesey, it was his third goal of the season.

Maine added to its lead at 9:35 of the third period. Cedric Lacroix (Shefford, Quebec) dug the puck out of the corner and found Stu Higgins (Troy, Mich.), who had a shot that Asmundson saved. The rebound went right to Malcolm Hayes (Atlanta, Ga.) who had a nearly open net as Asmundson was not able to recover in time after the initial shot. For Hayes, it was his fourth goal of the season.

Devin Shore (Ajax, Ontario) got a pass from Ben Hutton (Prescott, Ontario) at 19:57 of the third period and fired the puck into the empty net, giving Maine the 4-1 win. For Shore, it was his fifth goal of the season.

Maine outshot Canisius 41-29 in the game. There were just three minor penalties in the game as the Black Bears were 0-for-1 with the man advantage, while Canisius finished 0-for-2 on the power play.
