AMHERST, Mass. - The UMass hockey team pulled within a goal of #20/15 Boston University at the close of the second period, but the Terriers broke the contest open with six in the third to defeat the Minutemen, 8-1 on Friday night at the Mullins Center, the 2014-15 season opener for both teams.

BU opened the scoring in the first period as Evan Rodrigues sent the puck ahead to Cason Hohmann who fed Robbie Baillargeon across the slot for a tap-in at the back post at 12:22.

The Terriers then increased the margin to 2-0 with a tally at the 10:33 mark of the second period. Rodrigues and Matt Lane set up Nikolas Olsson with a drop pass that he drove home from the slot.

With the second period winding down, UMass cut its deficit in half. After redshirt senior Steven Guzzo was hit in the corner, senior Zack LaRue dug the puck out and sent it back to freshman Jake Horton, who ripped one past Connor LaCouvee from the top of the slot at 19:13.

However, the Terriers pulled away with a six-goal third period, which included a pair of tallies from freshman Jack Eichel at 1:54 and 6:02. Eichel also set up Danny O'Regan's tally at the 2:38 mark and Hohmann's goal for the squad's sixth of the evening 12:39 into the third.

A.J. Greer and O'Regan capped off the scoring for the Terriers with tallies at 17:56 and 19:55, respectively.

Boston University finished with a 39-32 shot advantage and did not have a power play opportunity in the contest as the Minutemen stayed out of the penalty box. UMass was 0-for-3 with the man advantage and won 40 of 63 faceoffs on the night (63.5%), paced by a 13-for-17 (76.5%) effort by sophomore Steven Iacobellis.

Minutemen senior netminder Steve Mastalerz stopped 29 shots in 52:39, while freshman Henry Dill played the remaining 7:21 and made two saves. Connor LaCouvee turned aside 31 in net for BU.

UMass will be back in action next weekend, Oct. 17-18, playing a pair at Michigan State.
