PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Four unanswered goals from the No. 6 Boston University Terriers led to a 4-1 defeat for the No. 8/9 Providence College men's hockey team on Friday night at Schneider Arena. It was the Hockey East and home-opener for the Friars.

Junior Steven McParland (Schreiber, Ontario) broke the scoreless tie in the first period, recording his first goal of the year. But, Providence (1-3-1, 0-1-0 HEA) could not find a way to beat Terriers goaltender Matt O'Connor for the rest of the game.

Boston University (4-0-0, 2-0-0 HEA) outshot the Friars, 41-18 in the game, which led to the team's four goals. John MacLeod scored the equalizer in the first period, while Ahti Oksanen's power-play goal in the second period proved to be the game winner. Evan Rodrigues added a goal in the second period while Jack Eichel capped off the game's scoring at 3:21 of the final period of play when he tallied a shorthanded goal.

Providence netminder Jon Gillies (South Portland, Maine)made 37 saves for the Friars.

The Friars opened the scoring at 7:27 of the first period when McParland netted his first goal of the season. The play leading up to the goal started when freshman Brian Pinho (North Andover, Mass.) fired a shot towards the goal that rebounded to junior Tom Parisi (Commack, N.Y.) on the blue line. Parisi then connected a pass to McParland, who was wide open in the face-off circle to the right of O'Connor. McParland's one-timer found its way between the goal post and the blocker of O'Connor.

Boston University evened the score at 11:26 of the first when defenseman John MacLeod scored his first career goal. After a battle for the puck behind the Friar net, Evan Rodrigues and Cason Hohmann combined to free the puck. The loose puck slid through the Friars zone to MacLeod, who skated in from the blue line to blast the puck past Gillies to tie the game at 1.

The Terriers widened their lead in the second period, as Oksanen and Rodrigues each notched a goal. Oksanen's came during an early BU power play to open the period. After receiving a pass from Rodrigues, Jack Eichel fired a shot on goal that beat Gillies but did not cross the goal line. Standing on the opposite side of the crease, Oksanen tapped the puck in for the lead.

At 13:41 of the second, Rodrigues registered his third point of the game with a goal to put the Terriers ahead 3-1. Robbie Baillargeon sent a shot on goal from the left face-off circle that Gillies made the initial save on but the rebound found Rodrigues just outside the Friars crease.

In the final period of play, the Friars had an early power-play opportunity when a Boston University player got called for hooking. Providence came close to making it a one-goal game when senior Ross Mauermann(Janesville, Wis.) sent a cross-ice pass to Pinho, but he failed to beat O'Connor on the play. On the same power play, Danny O'Regan, who putting pressure on the Friars while in their zone, gained possession of the puck along the boards and connected a pass to Eichel, who skated through the slot and notched a shorthanded goal at 3:21 that gave the Terriers a 4-1 lead.

Providence finished 0-for-4 on the power play, while the Terriers were 1-for-1. O'Connor totaled 17 saves.

Providence and Boston University close out their weekend series tomorrow night (Nov. 1) with a 7:00 p.m. game at the Terriers' Agganis Arena.
