MAINE BLACK BEARS SHUT OUT BY ST. LAWRENCE, 5-0

ORONO, Maine-- The University of Maine men's ice hockey team fell to St. Lawrence 5-0 on Friday night at Alfond Arena.

The Saints jumped out to a 1-0 lead at 7:48 of the first period. Riley Austin had a shot that was blocked, but he collected his own rebound and fired a shot that deflected off a Maine defenseman and into the back of the net. Greg Carey and Jeremy Wick assisted on the goal. St. Lawrence took the 1-0 lead into the first intermission.

Chris Martin gave the Saints a 2-0 lead just 1:08 into the second period. It was the first power play goal that Maine had allowed on the season. St Lawrence made it 3-0 when Kyle Flanagan fed Patrick Doherty. Doherty beat Maine goalie Dan Sullivan (York, Pa.) with a short-handed shot that went five hole.

Gunnar Hughes gave the Saints 4-0 lead when his shot deflected off a Maine skate and into the back of the goal at 3:45 of the third period. George Hughes and Flanagan both assisted on the goal.

The Saints closed out the scoring at 7:40 of the third period with a power play goal. In transition, Justin Baker released a shot that beat Sullivan glove side, going just inside the cross bar.

Maine outshot St. Lawrence 30-23 in the game. The Black Bears were scoreless on nine power play chances, while St. Lawrence finished two-for-eight.

Maine goalie Dan Sullivan made 17 saves in 47:40. Matt Morris (Ridgewood, N.J.) stopped one shot in the final 12:20 and did not allow a goal. Sullivan falls to 0-3-0 on the season. Matt Weninger stopped all 30 shots that he saw in goal for the Saints. He improves to 2-1-0 on the season.

Overall, Maine falls to 1-3-0 on the season, while St. Lawrence improves to 2-1-0.

The two teams will play the second game of their weekend series on Saturday, Oct. 20 at 7 PM at Alfond Arena.
