PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's hockey team (10-11-2, 8-7-1 HE) defeated No. 11 UMass Lowell River Hawks (14-7-0, 9-6-0 HE), by a score of 1-0 Tuesday night at Schneider Arena. Senior goaltender Alex Beaudry (Cumberland, Ont.) recorded his second shutout of the season in the victory. It marked Providence's first win over UMass Lowell since November 24, 2009.

Freshman Shane Luke (Dauphin, Man.) scored the lone goal of the game off the rush to give the Friars a 1-0 lead at 5:25 of the first period. Luke's goal, his second in three games, was assisted by freshman Stefan Demopoulos (La Mesa, Calif.) and senior Daniel New (White Plains, N.Y.).

One goal proved to be enough for the Friars to clinch the victory thanks in part to the strong penalty killing throughout the game, led by Beaudry. The Friars killed-off all four penalties including three minutes of a five-minute major in the second period.

The River Hawks outshot Providence, 29-21, in the game after being outshot 13-7 in the first period. UMass Lowell goaltender Doug Carr played a strong game in goal making 20 saves, including a point-blank stop in the third period on junior Billy Simon (Burnsville, Minn.). Beaudry stopped all 29 shots he faced registering his third career shutout and his first since a 3-0 win over Alabama-Huntsville on November 11, 2011. The win also marked PC's first 1-0 result since November 10, 2007 when Tyler Sims and the Friars blanked Maine.

The Friars play their next game on the road against No. 5 Merrimack at 4:00 on Sunday, January 29 at Lawler Arena. UMass Lowell faces UMass on Friday, January 27 at 7:00.
