HANOVER, N.H. - Senior alternate captain Brian Gibbons scored twice and goaltender John Muse recorded 30 saves to lead Boston College to the Ledyard National Bank Classic title with a 4-1 non-league win over Mercyhurst before 2,828 fans at Dartmouth College's Thompson Arena.
BC scored two times on the power play in the opening period. Freshman forward Kevin Hayes netted his second collegiate goal at 5:08 and Gibbons doubled the lead at 12:50.
After Mercyhurst halved the BC lead with its only goal at 3:04 of the second period, the teams played scoreless hockey for the next 18:16 until Gibbons put the Eagles back up two goals at 18:40 of the final frame.
Junior Barry Almeida scored into an empty net with 14.4 seconds remaining for the 4-1 final.
BC outshot Mercyhurst 38-31, including a 17-8 edge in the first period.
Muse recorded eight stops in each of the first and third periods and 14 in the middle stanza to earn his 12th win of the season and the 74th of his career.
Mercyhurst goaltender Ryan Zapolski stopped 34 shots in the losing effort and falls to 6-7-1.

Game Notes: Gibbons and defenseman Joe Whitney each earned All-Tournament honors while junior forward Paul Carey was named the tournament most valuable player; Carey assisted on Gibbons' first goal of the game and finished with four points - two goals and two assists - in two-game tournament ... Gibbons extended his scoring streak to nine games during which he has tallied 16 points - six goals and 10 assists ... Cam Atkinson, who assisted on both Gibbons goals, extended his streak to seven games (7-7--14).
