MAINE DROPS 6-3 DECISION TO UNION

Gustav Nyquist scored two goals for Maine

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - Gustav Nyquist (Malmo, Sweden) scored a pair of goals, but it was not enough as the University of Maine men's ice hockey team fell to Union 6-3 on Saturday night at Messa Rink in Schenectady, N.Y. Rookie Adam Shemansky (Robbinsville, N.J.) scored his second goal in as many nights for the Black Bears.

Union struck first with a goal at 9:10 of the first period. In transition, Dutchmen Jeremy Walsh and John Simpson skated down the slot together. Simpson was able to control the puck and put it past Wilson's glove side. Mike Wakita also assisted on the goal for Union. The Dutchmen made it a 2-0 lead at 11:05 when Walsh beat Wilson with a shot that found the top corner of the goal. Union took the 2-0 lead into the first intermission. The Dutchmen outshot Maine 8-4 in the period.

Union extended its lead to 3-0 at when Brian Yanovitch scored his first goal of the season on a shot that beat Wilson glove side over the shoulder. Simpson and Mario Valery-Trabucco each assisted on the goal which was scored at 7:54. The Dutchmen made it 4-0 at 9:42 when Adam Presizniuk scored his first of the season from Nolan Julseth-White and Valery-Trabucco.

Maine got on the board at 12:27 of the second period. Josh Van Dyk (Woodstock, Ontario) had a shot from the point that Maine rookie Adam Shemansky tipped past Union goalie Corey Milan. Spencer Abbott (Hamilton, Ontario) assisted also assisted on the goal.

Union made it 5-1 just 1:20 into the third period when Mario Valery-Trabucco notched his first goal of the season. Jason Walters assisted on the goal for the Dutchmen.

Gustav Nyquist (Malmo, Sweden) notched a power play goal for Maine at 7:36 of the third period to cut the Maine deficit to 5-2. Nyquist scored his second goal of the period at 9:58 to pull Maine to within two goals at 5-3. Van Dyk picked up his second assist of the game on the goal.

Union capped off the scoring with a power play goal at 19:24 by Brock Matheson.

Maine goalie Dave Wilson made 26 saves in goal for the Black Bears. He falls to 0-2-0 on the season. Corey Milan stopped 26 shots for Union.

Maine falls to 0-2-0 on the season, while Union improves to 2-0-0.
