PROVIDENCE TOPPED BY NOTRE DAME, 4-1

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's hockey team was defeated, 4-1, Saturday night by No. 12 Notre Dame in a non-conference game at Schneider Arena. The Fighting Irish jumped out to a 2-0 lead and went on to post their fourth consecutive victory.

UND's Garrett Regan scored at the 17:12 mark of the first period and added his second goal of the night at 7:36 of the second period to give his team a two-goal edge going into the third period. The Friars cut the lead in half (2-1) at 8:47 of the third period when freshman Matt Bergland (Faribault, Minn.) tallied his second goal of the season. Junior John Cavanagh (Warwick, R.I.) made a rush down the left wing before sliding a back-handed pass to Bergland who tapped the puck into the empty net. Sophomore Ian O'Connor (Londonderry, N.H.) also assisted on the goal. However, Notre Dame responded less than three minutes later to regain their two-goal lead (3-1). Calle Ridderwall was sent in on a breakaway and he was able to score his second goal of the season at the 10:00 mark. Ryan Thang added an empty-net goal to seal the win.

In goal, UND's Jordan Pearce made 26 saves to earn the win. Freshman Justin Gates (Cranston, R.I.) made 24 stops for the Friars.

The Friars are back in action on Friday, November 14 with a home game against Maine at Schneider Arena.
