LOWELL, Mass. (Nov. 1, 2007) - Sophomore G Andrew Braithwaite (Kingston, ONT) compiled 22 saves and was named the game's first star as Merrimack College defeated UMass Lowell, 3-1, Thursday night in a Hockey East Association clash at the Tsongas Arena.
The loss was UML's first of the season as it slipped to 2-1-1 (0-1-1 in Hockey East) entering Saturday's matchup at Boston University (7:00). The loss also ended UML's five-game unbeaten streak dating back to last year as well as a 10-game unbeaten streak against the Warriors (8-0-2).
Merrimack, which last defeated UML on Jan. 17, 2004, improved to 4-2-0 overall and 1-2-0 in Hockey East.
UML opened the scoring 28 seconds into the second period on a 5-on-3 situation. Sophomore Jonathan Maniff (Revere, MA) tallied from just left of the cage off quick feeds from sophomore F Chris Auger (Belleville, ONT) and freshman F Scott Campbell (Navan, ONT).
The Warriors equalized 7:06 into the second period when sophomore F Matt Jones (Kentwood, MI) beat UML goalkeeper Carter Hutton (Thunder Bay, ONT) from the right of the goal. Freshman D Fraser Allan (North Battleford, SASK) and freshman F Francois Ouimet (Lorraine, QUE) were credited with assists.
Freshman F Chris Barton (Calgary, ALTA) scored what proved to be the winner with just one second left in the period with help from junior D Grant Farrell (Calgary, ALTA) and sophomore F Rob Ricci (Brampton, ONT).
Ricci also added an empty net goal 19:33 into the third period to seal the win.
The Warriors outshot UML 27-23 as Braithwaite had 22 saves while Hutton stopped 24 shots.
