St. Paul - Forwards Benn Ferriero, Ben Smith and Joe Whitney each scored one goal and Dan Bertram recorded two third-period assists as No. 2 Boston College fell to No. 9 Michigan, 4-3, in overtime in the first round of the Ice Breaker Tournament at Xcel Energy Center.
Whitney and Ferriero each tallied third-period scores to rally BC from a two-goal deficit and tie the score at 3-3. Whitney beat Wolverine goaltender Billy Sauer at 8:59 for his first collegiate score. Ferriero later tied it with 6:17 left in regulation, beating Louis Caporusso to a loose puck deep in the Michigan zone and scoring on his backhand. Bertram and senior Brian O'Hanley tallied assists on the score.
The game-winning goal came halfway through the five-minute overtime session when Bertram's clearing attempt from inside the BC goal crease ricocheted off Ferriero's skate and into the goal. Ferriero was closing in on the BC goal as the puck had been briefly tied up by goaltender John Muse.
Michigan freshman Louis Caporusso received credit for the overtime game-winning score.
Muse made 24 saves in his collegiate debut, including Aaron Palushaj's breakway attempt just minutes into the game.
Michigan (1-0-0) scored the first two goals of the game. Freshman Carl Hagelin scored at 10:20 of the first period and junior Travis Turnbull doubled the Wolverine lead midway through the second frame - at 9:39.
BC sophomore Ben Smith scored the team's first goal of the 2007-08 season with 4:03 left in the second period. Defenseman Tim Filangieri assisted on the score.
Michigan outshot BC, 28-22, including an 11-5 advantage in the first period. The Eagles and Wolverines totaled an even 17 shots during the final three sessions of play.
