Freshman Joe Whitney had two goals and two assists for Boston College

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Junior Nathan Gerbe and freshman Joe Whitney each tallied two goals to lead fifth-ranked Boston College to a 7-1 Hockey East victory over Merrimack before 4,308 fans in Kelley Rink.

The host Eagles (2-1-2, 1-0-1 Hockey East) scored three times in the first period, three times in the second period and once in the third period.

After Gerbe opened the scoring at 8:26 of the first period, senior Matt Greene doubled the BC margin at 12:11. Whitney netted his first goal of the night on the power play at 18:58.

Gerbe, freshman Brian Gibbons and freshman Ryan Hayes each added one goal in the middle period. Hayes' score - at 18:45 - came on the power play.

Merrimack sophomore Rob Ricci netted a power-play goal at 5:37 of the third period, before Whitney closed the night's scoring at 8:26.

BC freshman John Muse made 18 stops to earn his second collegiate victory. Junior Patrick Watson (15 saves) and sophomore Andrew Braithwaite (12 saves) split goaltending duties for Merrimack (3-1-0, 0-1-0 HE).
