MAINE TOPS NEW BRUNSWICK IN OVERTIME, 3-2
Freshman forward Tony Morrone nets overtime game-winner

ORONO, Maine - The University of Maine men's ice hockey team defeated New Brunswick 3-2 in overtime in an exhibition game on Wednesday night at Alfond Arena. Tony Morrone scored the game winner for the Black Bears at 2:29 into the extra session. Maine also had goals by Teddy Purcell and Bret Tyler, while David Wilson had 27 saves in net. The Black Bears remain at 9-3-1 on the season and 4-3-1 in Hockey East.

The Varsity Reds had an early advantage as they had three power play chances in the first ten minutes of the game to the Black Bears' one power play. With the teams back at even strength, New Brunswick took the lead when William Johnston scored with an assist from Nick Marach at 11:19. It did not take Maine long to respond as Brett Carriere ( Ottawa, Ontario) fired a shot that was saved by Michael Ouzas, but Teddy Purcell (St. John's, Newfoundland) scored on the rebound at 12:56. With Maine on their second power play chance of the game, Bret Tyler (Maynard, Mass.) scored with an assist from Matt Duffy (Windham, Maine) at 18:13. Maine had an eight to five lead on shots in the first period.

In the second period, Maine coach Tim Whitehead shuffled the lines and defensive pairings. New Brunswick had a shot by Robert Pearce that was saved by David Wilson four minutes into the period. After trading power play chances, David Bowman of the Varsity Reds hit the post with a shot. Maine's fifth power play chance of the game featured a shot by Tony Morrone (West Palm Beach, Fla.) that was saved and rebounded out to Tyler Czuba (Kelowna, British Columbia), but Czuba did not get a shot on net. New Brunswick had a ten to six lead on shots in the second period.

New Brunswick tied the game at 12:32 in the third period when Lachlan MacIntosh scored with an assist from Jessie Ferguson. As time was winding down in regulation, Maine had one last power play opportunity, but were unable to generate any strong chances and the game went into overtime.

In overtime, New Brunswick had the first two shot on goal. Maine was able to get the win when Tony Morrone, seeing his first game action of the season, picked up a loose puck and scored an unassisted goal at 2:29 in overtime.

In goal, Maine's David Wilson had two goals against and 27 saves. For New Brunswick, Michael Ouzas had three goals against and 18 saves. Maine had five penalties for ten minutes and New Brunswick had six penalties for 12 minutes. On power plays, Maine was 1-6 and New Brunswick was 0-5. For the game, Maine was outshot by the Varsity Reds 29 to 21.

The Black Bears will be at Northeastern on December 9 for the final Hockey East game before the semester break. Maine will also host Mercyhurst at the Cumberland County Civic Center on December 16.
