PROVIDENCE FALLS TO BROWN, 2-1

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Brown University (4-3-2) scored twice in the first period and held on to defeat the Providence College (4-9-1) men’s hockey team, 2-1, Sunday afternoon in the 21st annual Mayor’s Cup at Meehan Auditorium.

The Bears took a 2-0 first period lead as they controlled the first 20 minutes, outshooting the Friars, 21-7. Sean Muncy scored his sixth goal of the season at 6:06, while Brian Ihnacak added his first at 10:25 to give Brown the early edge. The Friars cut the lead in half at 2:49 of the second period, capitalizing on a two-man advantage power play. Sophomore Cody Wild (North Providence, R.I.) slipped the puck to the bottom of the right face off circle to senior Colin McDonald (Wethersfield, Conn.), who rifled a high wrist shot past Brown goalie Dan Rosen. The Friars outshot the Bears, 18-8, in the second period, but had to kill off five penalties, including a five-minute major.

In the third period, the Friars outshot the Bears, 11-6, but they could not score the equalizer. PC had a power play with 1:10 left in the third period and pulled junior goalie Tyler Sims (Grand Blanc, Mich.) to create a 6-on-4 advantage. However, time ran out on the Friars as Brown reclaimed the Mayor’s Cup. The Friars hold an 11-8-2 lead in the Mayor’s Cup.

Sims finished with 33 saves, while Rosen stopped 35 shots for the Bears. PC is back in action on Friday, December 1 with a road game at Maine.
