MASSACHUSETTS TOPS BOSTON COLLEGE, 5-3

Chestnut Hill, Mass. - Freshman Will Ortiz scored the game-winning goal and led a quartet of multiple-point scorers while sophomore goalie Jon Quick made 33 saves to lead No. 19 Massachusetts to a 5-3 Hockey East victory over 13th-ranked Boston College before 5,419 fans in Conte Forum.

The visiting Minutemen (13-8-4, 10-6-2 Hockey East) scored three unanswered goals in the first period - one each from Matt Anderson, Justin Braun and P.J. Fenton - and scored once in each of the game's final two frames to earn the victory.

Fenton, senior captain Matt Anderson and freshman defenseman Justin Braun each had one goal and one assist for the victors.

BC sophomore Nathan Gerbe scored at 12:26 of the third period to bring the Eagles within two goals - at 4-2 - but right wing Matt Burto beat goalie Cory Schneider (22 saves) to retake the three-goal lead 36 seconds later.

The Eagles (14-10-1, 11-8-1 HE) netted their third and final goal at 14:07 when freshman forward Ben Smith redirected a Matt Price pass with his right leg past goaltender Jon Quick.

BC, which outshot UMass 17-4 in the third period, finished with a 36-27 advantage in the game.

With the win, UMass captured the league regular-season series against BC, 2-1-0.
