BOSTON COLLEGE UPENDS ST. THOMAS, 5-3

Sophomore forward Nathan Gerbe registered one goal and two assists and classmate Brock Bradford scored twice to lead top-ranked Boston College to a 5-3 exhibition victory over St. Thomas University Friday in Kelley Rink.

Bradford got the host Eagles on the scoreboard at 6:36 of the opening period and sophomore defensemen Anthony Aiello doubled the BC lead at 12:48. Gerbe assisted on both first-period scores.

Freshman forward Ben Smith scored late in the second period to increase the lead to 3-0, before St. Thomas, out of New Brunswick, Canada, twice trimmed the deficit to one goal in the third period.

St. Thomas recorded consecutive goals from Justin Bowers and Thatcher Bell to cut the Eagles’ lead to one goal – at 3-2 – with 9:38 remaining.

After Bradford netted his second score of the night, redirecting junior Dan Bertram’s shot from the point, St. Thomas’ Justin McCutcheon tallied a power-play goal with 1:36 left to play to narrow the Eagles’ lead to 4-3.

Gerbe sealed the BC victory with an empty-net goal at 19:17.

Junior goalie Cory Schneider registered 12 saves in two periods of action. Backup goaltender Joe Pearce tallied six saves and allowed three goals in the final frame.
