BC sophomore Chris Kreider is the only active NCAA player selected to the squad

COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. - Five Hockey East players with ties to the conference were among the first 16 players named to the 2011 United States Men's National Team on Wednesday afternoon, as announced by USA Hockey. The players will compete at the International Ice Hockey Federation World Men's Championship, April 29 - May 15, in Kosice and Bratislava, Slovakia.

Sophomore forward Chris Kreider (Boxford, Mass.) of Boston College was the only active NCAA player to be named to the club, along with former Eagle Ryan Shannon (Darien, Conn.) up front. Kreider notched 24 points in 32 games, helping the Eagles capture the Hockey East regular-season and tournament Championships in 2011. Shannon recorded 27 points (11g,16a) and skated in 79 games for the Ottawa Senators in his fourth NHL season.

Boston University's Kevin Shattenkirk (New Rochelle, N.Y.) and Providence College's Mark Fayne (Nashua, N.H.) were both selected to the team on the blueline. All four players will be making their first appearance in the World Championships at the end of the month. Shattenkirk had a very successful rookie season posting 43 points (9g,34a) and playing in 72 games with the Colorado Avalanche and St. Louis Blues. Fayne saw action in 57 games with the New Jersey Devils, talliying 14 points (4g,10a), after playing 19 games with the Albany Devils (AHL) to begin the year.

University of New Hampshire alum Ty Conklin (Anchorage, Alaska) was one of two goaltenders named to the team and one of seven players with previous experience on the U.S. Men's National Team. Conklin competed for the U.S. Men's National Team at the 2004 (bronze) and 2005 IIHF World Men's Championships and the 2004 World Cup of Hockey. Conklin appeared in 25 games for the St. Louis Blues and notched a 3.22 GAA with a 8-8-4 overall record in his eighth season in the NHL.

In addition to the players, several coaches and administrators affiliated with the team have ties to the league, including Head Coach Scott Gordon, a graduate of Boston College, while current Northeastern Head Coach Greg Cronin will serve as an Assistant Coach with the team. Both Brian Burke (PC) and David Poile (NU) were part of the U.S. Men's National Team Advisory Group that assisted in selecting the team.
