Massachusetts, Northeastern and Providence will represent Hockey East this weekend in NCAA regional action

News and notes from the upcoming weekend of Hockey East action

#4 Massachusetts vs. #13 Harvard

- Massachusetts, the Hockey East Regular Season Champion, returns to the NCAA tournament for just the second time in program history and the first time since 2007. It will be the first meeting for the Minutemen against Harvard since the 2011-12 season when they played to a 4-4 overtime draw.

- The Minutemen boast the only Top-10 finalist in Hockey East for the Hobey Baker Memorial Award in sophomore Cale Makar (Calgary, Alta.) The defenseman was unanimously tabbed Hockey East Player of the Year and a First Team All-Star after finishing second in conference scoring (30 points) and first in both assists (22) and on-ice rating (plus-21.)

- Makar was joined by Mitchell Chaffee (Rockland, Mich.) as a First Team All-Star. The sophomore forward led the team in goals this season with 17 scores.

- The Minutemen are 1-1-0 all time in the NCAA tournament and will look to make their first ever appearance in the Frozen Four.

- UMass was tabbed as the fourth overall seed in the 2019 NCAA Tournament, granting them the right to play Harvard as the one seed in the Northeast Regional in Manchester, New Hampshire. The winner will advance to the Northeast Regional Championship against the winner of Friday's Clarkson vs. Notre Dame match up.


#5 Northeastern vs. #10 Cornell

- Northeastern heads back to the NCAA tournament for the second straight year and seventh time in program history. The Huskies head into the weekend following their 27th win of the season, the most in program history, n the Hockey East Championship game. Their 3-2 win over Boston College was good for their third Lamoriello Trophy and an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.

- Cayden Primeau (Voorhees, N.J.) was named MVP of the Hockey East Tournament and was selected to the 2019 Steve Nazro All-Tournament Team after turning away 67 shots through the two games at TD Garden. The sophomore netminder was also named the Stop It Goaltending Goaltender of the Year and was selected as a Hockey East First Team All-Star for the second season in a row.

- Northeastern is 3-6-1 in the postseason tournament, reaching the Frozen Four once in seven appearances.

- Should the Huskies advance to Sunday's East Regional championship game in Providence, Northeastern will face either Minnesota State or league-foe Providence Friars.


#11 Providence vs. #3 Minnesota State

- Providence returns to the postseason tournament for the sixth straight season, the longest active streak of any Hockey East team and the second longest active streak in the nation.

- The Friars will look to make their first return to the Frozen Four since 2015, when they claimed their first national championship in program history with a 4-3 victory over Hockey East opponent Boston University at TD Garden in Boston.

- Providence is 15-19-0 all-time in the NCAA tournament, with the one national title to their name.

- Saturday will mark just will be just the ninth meeting all-time between Providence and Minnesota State, and the first in NCAA Tournament play. Providence is 6-2-0 all-time against the Mavericks, including a two-game sweep in October 2013.
